Using Radiation Therapy to Treat Arthritis

Oklahoma Proton Center and its partner, Oklahoma Cancer Center, are proud to be one of just a handful of locations in the state offering radiation as a treatment for arthritis. Please keep reading to learn more about this novel treatment.

Using Radiation Therapy to Treat Arthritis: A Lesser-Known Approach

Arthritis affects millions of people worldwide, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. While traditional treatments such as pain relievers, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications are commonly used, a lesser-known approach—radiation therapy—is gaining attention as a potential alternative for managing arthritis symptoms.

What is Radiation Therapy for Arthritis?

Radiation therapy, also known as radiosynoviorthesis (RSO) or low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT), has been used in Europe for decades as a non-invasive method to alleviate arthritis-related pain and inflammation. Unlike high-dose radiation used for cancer treatment, this therapy employs low doses to target affected joints, reducing inflammation and slowing disease progression.

How Does It Work?

Radiation therapy for arthritis involves the application of low doses of ionizing radiation to affected joints. The mechanism behind this treatment involves:

  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Radiation reduces inflammatory cell activity, thereby alleviating pain and swelling.
  • Immune modulation: It helps regulate the immune system response, preventing excessive joint inflammation.
  • Pain relief: Many patients experience long-term pain relief after a series of treatments, often without the need for additional medications.

What is the Treatment Process Like?

Patients who are interested in this option can reach out to Oklahoma Proton Center at (405) 773 – 6700 to schedule a consultation with one of our radiation oncologists. If a physician determines that you are a good candidate, then you will be scheduled for a treatment planning CT Scan. The images acquired from this scan will be used to create a custom treatment plan for your case.

Once the plan is complete, our team will reach out to you to schedule your treatment. The treatments occur once a day over the course of 3 to 10 days. Each treatment takes 15 – 20 minutes and occurs at the Oklahoma Cancer Center location at 11100 Hefner Pointe Drive, Oklahoma City, OK 73120. We use a state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator with image guidance to precisely deliver a custom treatment each day.

Patients have the option to repeat the treatment down the road if symptoms reoccur.

Who Can Benefit from Radiation Therapy for Arthritis?

This treatment is particularly useful for individuals who:

  • Have osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or other inflammatory joint diseases.
  • Do not respond well to conventional treatments like NSAIDs or corticosteroids.
  • Want a non-surgical, low-risk option for symptom relief.

Advantages and Risks

Advantages:

  • Non-invasive and painless
  • Minimal side effects compared to systemic medications
  • Provides long-term relief for some patients
  • May reduce dependency on painkillers

Risks and Considerations:

  • Potential but rare side effects include localized skin irritation
  • The long-term effects of repeated low-dose radiation are still being studied

The Future of Radiation Therapy for Arthritis

With increasing interest in non-pharmaceutical arthritis treatments, radiation therapy may become a more accessible option for patients seeking long-lasting relief. If you’re struggling with arthritis and traditional treatments haven’t worked for you, discussing radiation therapy with a specialist could be worthwhile. As medical advancements continue, this innovative approach might offer hope for millions suffering from chronic joint pain.
