PLUVICTO

Overview

At Oklahoma Proton Center, we are dedicated to providing the latest and most effective treatments to our patients, ensuring the highest standards of care and support throughout your cancer journey.

PLUVICTO (lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan) is an innovative radioligand therapy designed to target and treat prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-positive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). It offers a promising option for patients who have progressed after other standard treatments.

What is PLUVICTO?

PLUVICTO (lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan) is a targeted radiopharmaceutical specifically designed to treat advanced prostate cancer, particularly metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). This therapy combines a targeting molecule (ligand) with a radioactive isotope, delivering radiation directly to cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

How does PLUVICTO work?

PLUVICTO leverages the properties of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a protein commonly found on the surface of prostate cancer cells. Some key features of Pluvicto are:

  1. Targeted Approach: PLUVICTO uses a ligand that binds specifically to PSMA on prostate cancer cells. This targeted mechanism helps to deliver radiation directly to the cancer cells, enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment and reducing the impact on healthy tissue.
  2. Radioactive Isotope: The therapy includes a radioactive component that emits radiation to destroy the cancer cells. The isotope used in Pluvicto helps to achieve localized radiation therapy, which is less likely to cause widespread side effects.
  3. Minimized Side Effects: By focusing the radiation on cancer cells, Pluvicto aims to minimize the side effects commonly associated with broader radiation treatments, such as damage to surrounding healthy tissues and organs.
  4. Advanced Prostate Cancer: PLUVICTO is typically used for patients with advanced prostate cancer that has not responded to other treatments like hormone therapy or chemotherapy. It offers a new line of therapy for those with limited options.

Eligibility for PLUVICTO Treatment

PLUVICTO is typically recommended for patients with advanced prostate cancer that has not responded to conventional therapies, such as hormone therapy or chemotherapy. Your eligibility for PLUVICTO will be determined through a comprehensive evaluation by our oncology specialists, including:

  • Medical history review
  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Laboratory tests
  • Overall health assessment

Patients interested in PLUVICTO treatment should consult with their oncology team to determine if they are suitable candidates. The healthcare team will consider all relevant factors, including the patient’s cancer stage, previous treatment history, overall health, and the presence of PSMA on cancer cells.

Benefits of PLUVICTO Treatment

Patients undergoing PLUVICTO therapy can experience several potential benefits, including:

Fewer Side Effects: The targeted nature of the therapy helps to minimize the common side effects associated with broader radiation treatments.

Improved Survival Rates: Clinical trials have shown that PLUVICTO can extend overall survival in patients with advanced prostate cancer.

Enhanced Quality of Life: By specifically targeting cancer cells, Pluvicto can reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients.

Treatment Process:

  • Assessment: Patients undergo diagnostic imaging and tests to confirm the presence of PSMA on their cancer cells.
  • Administration: PLUVICTO is administered intravenously in outpatient sessions. The number and frequency of sessions depend on individual treatment plans. PLUVICTO is given in up to 6 doses (once every 6 weeks).
  • Monitoring: Patients are closely monitored for response to treatment and any potential side effects.
